The Mwanza Intervention Trials Unit (MITU), a premier collaborative research unit of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and the National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR), is inviting applications from highly motivated and qualified Tanzanians to fill new positions.
MITU is currently partnering with international research teams to implement a trial evaluating a single dose of the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine in males.
As part of this trial, a large-scale community-based survey will be conducted across the region.

Available Positions
Position 1: Medical Doctor (1 Post)
Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive trial information to potential participants, ensuring clear understanding and answering queries.
- Perform physical examinations and clinical sample collection according to standard operating procedures (SOPs), ensuring quality assurance.
- Lead a small team of field staff and respond to requests for clinical support from survey team leads.
- Ensure excellent clinical prescribing practices and proper accountability/storage of drugs and field equipment.
- Accurately collect and document trial data in source documents following study protocols and Good Clinical Practice (GCP) principles.
Qualifications and Experience
- Education: Fully-registered Medical Doctor (MD) with a degree from a recognized university.
- Licensing: Active clinical practice within the past 3 years with valid registration to practice medicine in Tanzania.
- Experience: At least 3 years of experience in medical research.
- Skills: Excellent written and oral communication skills in both English and Swahili.
Position 2: Research Assistant – Nurse/Clinician (Multiple Posts)
Duties and Responsibilities
- Educate potential participants about the trial, ensuring informed consent and answering participant questions.
- Conduct physical examinations and collect biological samples following required standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- Accurately collect, manage, and record trial data into designated source documents.
- Adhere strictly to the study protocol and international principles of Good Clinical Practice (GCP).
Qualifications and Experience
- Education/Licensing: Fully-registered Nurse Practitioner or Clinical Officer (CO) with an up-to-date license to practice in Tanzania.
- Experience: Minimum of 2 years of post-qualification experience working in hospital or clinical settings.
- Research Skills: Prior experience working within a medical research environment is highly desired.
- Languages: Excellent written and verbal communication skills in Swahili and English.
Additional Requirements for All Roles
- Candidates must be ready to be based in Mwanza and willing to travel extensively across the region for fieldwork.
