Job Description

The Clinical Mentor supports the strengthening of day-to-day clinical care across WAJAMAMA-supported sites and the WAJAMAMA clinic. Working under the clinical leadership of the Clinical Training Lead, this role focuses on reinforcing clinical standards, supporting competency development, conducting focused quality observations, and providing first-level case review support. The role ensures that evidence-based maternal and newborn care is consistently applied in both routine service delivery and Group Care Model (GCM) sessions.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Clinical Service Delivery (WAJAMAMA Clinic)

  • Provide direct maternal and newborn clinical care at the WAJAMAMA clinic.

  • Model high-quality, respectful, evidence-based clinical practice.

  • Demonstrate excellence in clinical documentation and clinical reasoning.

  • Identify clinical learning cases for structured mentorship discussions.

  • Contribute to maintaining and reinforcing adherence to clinical protocols and standards developed under senior clinical guidance.

2. Clinical Mentorship, Coaching & Supervision

  • Conduct focused clinical practice observations to reinforce standards and technical quality.

  • Support facilitators in applying evidence-based maternal and newborn care within Group Care sessions.

  • Conduct supportive supervisions, provide structured, constructive, and competency-based feedback following observations, and support follow-up on agreed supervision action plans.

  • Identify gaps in clinical reasoning, communication, respectful care, or technical skills and support targeted coaching.

  • Escalate complex clinical cases or concerns to the Senior Clinical Mentor.

3. Training & Capacity Development

  • Support the facilitation of clinical skills training and simulation exercises.

  • Contribute to the development of case-based learning sessions.

  • Provide post-training follow-up focused on strengthening clinical application.

  • Support the Master Trainer Program through practical clinical reinforcement and skills development.

  • Promote a culture of continuous professional development within sites.

4. M&E, Quality Improvement & Systems Strengthening

  • Support routine data cleaning processes to ensure completeness, accuracy, and consistency across sites.

  • Contribute to strengthening a data-use culture within the clinical team and government employees.

  • Contribute to the implementation of quality improvement initiatives across sites, using data insights to inform coaching and performance improvement.

  • Identify operational bottlenecks affecting service delivery or GCM implementation, and support alignment between mentorship findings and program learning priorities.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Must be a Tanzanian / Zanzibari Registered Nurse-Midwife.

  • Strong experience in maternal and newborn clinical care.

  • Experience in clinical supervision, mentoring, or coaching is strongly preferred.

  • Demonstrated competence in complex case recognition and appropriate escalation.

  • Strong analytical and clinical reasoning skills.

  • Proven ability to provide structured, constructive, and supportive feedback.
