The Role
As the Project Medical Officer (Clinical – Eye Health), you will be at the heart of our field operations. You will bridge the gap between clinical excellence and project coordination, ensuring that our surgical camps and outreach programs run smoothly and that patients receive world-class follow-up care.
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Clinical Excellence & Coordination
- Service Oversight: Support comprehensive ophthalmic services, including eye screenings, outpatient consultations, and assisting in cataract and minor eye surgeries.
- Outreach Leadership: Lead on-site clinical activities during mobile eye camps and cataract surgical initiatives.
- Team Collaboration: Work alongside Ophthalmologists, Ophthalmic Nurses, and Optometrists to ensure a seamless patient journey.
- Patient Flow: Manage triage and referral systems to ensure patients with complex conditions are directed to appropriate care.
2. Operations & Management
- Technical Reporting: Maintain accurate ophthalmic registers and compile clinical data for donor and internal reports.
- Resource Management: Oversee medical stock and equipment to ensure surgical camps are always fully equipped and operational.
- Partnership Liaison: Serve as a clinical point of contact for partner hospitals, suppliers, and government health authorities.
3. Capacity Building
- Mentorship: Provide on-the-job training and support to local health personnel to improve the sustainability of eye health services.
Qualifications and Experience
| Requirement | Description |
| Education | Diploma in Nursing, Ophthalmic Nursing, or a related clinical field. |
| Certification | Valid professional registration with the relevant Tanzanian Council. |
| Experience | Minimum 12 months of clinical experience. |
| Preferred Background | Direct experience in cataract programs or hospital eye units is a significant advantage. |
| Tech Skills | Proficiency in MS Word and Excel; ability to draft professional reports independently. |
| Communication | Fluent in both English and Swahili (written and verbal). |
