Ifakara Health Institute (IHI) is a global leader in health research. We are currently launching a transformative Maternal and Newborn Health Program under the Beginnings Fund. This initiative focuses on 210 high-volume facilities across 12 regions in Tanzania, utilizing a hub-and-spoke model to bridge gaps in workforce, infrastructure, and clinical quality.
Our goal is clear: Accelerate the reduction of maternal and neonatal mortality to meet Tanzaniaโs 2030 health targets. We need a visionary Clinical Advisor to lead the charge.

As the Clinical Lead and Trusted Advisor, you will be the technical heartbeat of the program. You won’t just oversee services; you will design the clinical governance that saves lives. You will serve as the primary technical interface between IHI and the Ministry of Health (MoH), PMO-RALG, and regional health management teams.

Duties and Responsibilities
1. Technical Leadership & Clinical Design
- Co-design program strategies and service delivery models (Level 2 newborn care).
- Harmonize national tools and training materials with the MoH and professional associations.
- Lead technical mentoring strategies for essential and inpatient neonatal care.
2. Quality Excellence & Accountability
- Drive Clinical Audits: Lead perinatal death reviews and neonatal case reviews to ensure accountability.
- Site Readiness: Oversee facility assessments and the phased scale-up of interventions.
- Governance: Advise on patient safety mechanisms and institutionalizing program gains within government systems.
3. Capacity Building & Mentorship
- Guidance: Develop pre-service and in-service training strategies for health workers.
- Innovation: Promote task-sharing and team-based clinical models.
- Partnerships: Collaborate with training institutions to ensure competence-based neonatal care.
4. Data-Driven Decision Making
- Oversight: Monitor clinical indicators and dashboards (using DHIS2, MTUHA, Afya-eHMIS).
- Research: Contribute to operational research and document best practices for national scale-up.
Qualifications and Experience
Essential Qualifications
- Education: Medical Degree (MD) with a specialization in Paediatrics and Child Health (MMed or equivalent).
- Licensing: Must be registered (or eligible) with the Medical Council of Tanganyika (MCT).
- Experience: Minimum 3โ5 years of clinical experience in specialized paediatrics/neonatology.
Preferred Skills
- System Expert: Deep understanding of Tanzaniaโs national MNH policies and government health systems.
- Strategist: Ability to translate complex clinical evidence into practical, scalable field interventions.
- Communicator: Fluent in English and Swahili with excellent presentation and stakeholder management skills.
- Data Literate: Proficient in using routine health data for quality improvement (QI).
