OSHA is a government agency under the Prime Minister’s Office (Labour, Youth, Employment and Persons with Disabilities). The institution is responsible for protecting workers against hazards present in workplaces that may cause occupational diseases and accidents. This responsibility is carried out through the enforcement and supervision of the Occupational Health and Safety Act No. 5 of 2003.
The history of OSHA dates back to 2001, when it was established under the Executive Agencies Act No. 30 of 1997 as part of the Government Service Delivery Improvement Programme. The purpose of establishing OSHA was to create a government body responsible for overseeing occupational safety and health in workplaces.
OSHA is mandated to ensure that workers operate in safe and healthy working environments by enforcing established procedures aimed at preventing work-related accidents and occupational diseases.
