Kilombero Sugar Company Limited (KSCL), commonly known by its strong Bwana Sukari brand, is the largest sugar producer in Tanzania. Located in Kidatu within the fertile Kilombero Valley in Morogoro Region, the company operates two major estates and mills (Msolwa and Ruembe) and spans a total crop area of 26,000 ha—10,000 ha owned by KSCL and about 16,000 ha cultivated by its network of roughly 8,000 smallholder farmers, the Kilombero Growers. Together, they crush around 600,000 tonnes of cane annually, yielding approximately 126,000 tonnes of sugar, and have catalyzed the establishment of over 200 local agribusinesses.
The company is a part of Illovo Sugar Africa (75%) with the Tanzanian government holding the remaining 25%, producing not only brown sugar but also potable ethanol and using bagasse to generate renewable electricity for the grid.Building on its significant role in national sugar supply, KSCL is executing its K4 expansion project worth over TZS 744 billion (~US 281 million). This development—set to be completed by mid‑2025—involves a new mill facility that will more than double annual production from around 127,000 to 271,000 tonnes.
while also increasing clean energy co-generation capacity (8–15 MW), supporting up to 16,000 out-growers, and creating approx. 4,440 jobs. The expansion is aligned with Tanzania’s Vision 2025 to achieve sugar self‑sufficiency and reduce import dependency, with estimates projecting annual foreign exchange savings of up to US $71 million and a strengthened local economy through higher farmer incomes and tax contributions.
