Bagamoyo Sugar Limited, a subsidiary of the Bakhresa Group, was officially incorporated on December 1, 2016, at the request of the Tanzanian Government. Located in Makurunge, within the Bagamoyo District, the greenfield project aims to cultivate sugarcane on a nucleus estate and establish a large-scale sugar production facility. This initiative represents a major step forward for Tanzania, marking the first time such a project is being implemented at this scale in the country.

The project’s primary goal is to reduce Tanzania’s reliance on sugar imports by achieving self-sufficiency and eventually producing a surplus for export. The sugar plant is being constructed with equipment supplied by Thyssenkrupp India Pvt Ltd, a subsidiary of the German engineering company, while advanced irrigation technology from Israeli-based Netafim is being employed to support farm operations. Construction and setup are proceeding as planned, with commercial production targeted to begin by mid-2022. In its first phase, the plant is expected to yield approximately 30,000 tonnes of sugar.

In line with the Bakhresa Group’s broader vision of contributing to national development, the Bagamoyo Sugar project is also focused on empowering the local community. Located in the village of Makurunge, the project is creating substantial employment opportunities for thousands of young, unemployed Tanzanians. The company emphasizes inclusivity and operates as an equal opportunity employer, aiming to improve livelihoods while advancing the country’s agricultural and industrial capabilities.
