Kilombero Sugar Company Limited (KSCL), a key player in Tanzania’s sugar industry, operates alongside Illovo Distillers Tanzania Limited (IDTL) and is a subsidiary of Illovo Sugar Africa Limited, the continent’s largest sugar producer. Located in the Morogoro region in central-southern Tanzania, the company manages two neighboring agricultural estates and sugar factories—Msolwa and Ruembe—positioned on opposite sides of the Great Ruaha River and connected by a low-level bridge.
Each year, Kilombero Sugar produces about 130,000 tons of sugar from roughly 1.25 million tons of sugarcane. Around 55% of the cane is cultivated by the company itself, while the remaining 45% is supplied by independent growers. These farmers benefit from ongoing support, training, and development programs offered by the company. KSCL markets its sugar under the ‘Bwana Sukari’ brand through its effective “route to market” model, which has earned widespread support from local consumers for its brown sugar products.
As one of four major sugar producers in Tanzania, KSCL operates in a country that still imports sugar due to limited production, currently just above 300,000 tons annually.
