USAID Jobs for Laboratory Professionals at CIHEB Tanzania

CIHEB Tanzania is currently seeking qualified and motivated individuals for several key positions in the USAID Usalama wa Afya Duniani project, aimed at strengthening laboratory systems and improving public health in Tanzania.

These roles are crucial in enhancing laboratory operations and ensuring biosafety, biosecurity, and quality assurance standards are met across the national laboratory network. Below are the details of the available positions:

1. Technical Laboratory Officer – Biosafety and Biosecurity (TLO-BSBS)

Location: Dar es Salaam
Reports to: Laboratory and BSBS Services Advisor

Job Summary:

The TLO-BSBS will be responsible for supporting and implementing strategies to strengthen the Biosafety and Biosecurity (BSBS) framework in Tanzania. This involves working closely with national laboratories and relevant stakeholders to ensure compliance with safety regulations and the effective management of dangerous pathogens and Emerging Infectious Diseases (EIDs).

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support capacity building in national laboratories, focusing on BSL-3 containment and bio-repository systems.
  • Develop and disseminate BSBS guidelines, protocols, and SOPs.
  • Collaborate with multisectoral working groups to implement BSBS strategies.
  • Facilitate the certification and accreditation of laboratories working with EIDs.
  • Ensure integration of molecular waste management systems.
  • Oversee training programs and mentorship for laboratory staff.
  • Collaborate with International Health Regulations (IHR) TWG on Biosafety and Biosecurity reporting.

Qualifications and Requirements:

QualificationExperience
BSC in Health Laboratory Sciences, Molecular Biology & BiotechnologyMinimum 3 years in laboratory biosafety, biosecurity, or related fields
Master’s degree in Public Health, Microbiology, or related field (added advantage)Specific training or fellowship in BSBS
Familiarity with BSBS regulatory frameworksExperience in capacity building and training
Strong communication, leadership, and analytical skillsProficiency in information security and pathogen control

2. Technical Laboratory Officer – System Strengthening (TLO-SS)

Location: Dar es Salaam
Reports to: Laboratory and BSBS Services Advisor

Job Summary:

The TLO-SS will design, implement, and oversee systems integration for laboratory networks, focusing on sample referral systems and diagnostic mechanisms to detect EIDs. This role will strengthen laboratory systems in Tanzania to achieve the objectives of the USAID Usalama wa Afya Duniani project.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Strengthen national laboratory systems and governance across tiered laboratory networks.
  • Support integration of clinical laboratories and health event surveillance systems.
  • Implement recommendations from the Joint External Evaluation (JEE 2023).
  • Develop key performance indicators and metrics for laboratory services.
  • Collaborate with surveillance teams to enhance laboratory-based surveillance for EIDs.
  • Support policy development and update national strategies for laboratory operations.

Qualifications and Requirements:

3. Technical Laboratory Officer – Quality Assurance (TLO-QA)

Location: Dar es Salaam
Reports to: Laboratory and BSBS Services Advisor

Job Summary:

The TLO-QA will ensure that the laboratory services across Tanzania meet international and national quality standards, such as ISO 15189, 17025, and 17043. This role involves supporting the design and implementation of a quality assurance framework for the USAID Usalama wa Afya Duniani project, focusing on laboratory accreditation and continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate quality assurance activities in laboratories across Tanzania.
  • Support the implementation of external and internal quality control programs.
  • Mentor and train laboratory staff to ensure compliance with national and international quality standards.
  • Assist laboratories in obtaining ISO 17043 accreditation for proficiency testing.
  • Oversee the implementation of quality management systems (QMS) and assist in periodic evaluations and assessments.

Qualifications and Requirements:
