Kilombero Sugar Limited (KSCL) is the leading sugar producer in Tanzania and operates in close partnership with Illovo Distillers Tanzania Limited (IDTL). It is part of Illovo Sugar Africa, the continent’s largest sugar manufacturing group. Located in the Morogoro region in central-southern Tanzania, the company operates two neighboring agricultural estates and sugar mills—Msolwa and Ruembe—positioned on either side of the Great Ruaha River and connected by a low-level bridge.
KSCL produces approximately 130,000 tons of sugar annually from about 1.25 million tons of sugarcane. Of this, 55% comes from the company’s own plantations, while the remaining 45% is sourced from local outgrowers who receive ongoing training, agricultural support, and development services from the company.
Through its successful “route to market” distribution model, Kilombero Sugar has built strong local demand for its ‘Bwana Sukari’ branded brown sugar, which is intended for direct consumption. KSCL is one of four sugar producers in Tanzania; however, the country currently remains a net importer of sugar, with national production slightly exceeding 300,000 tons.
